COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina Sen. Darline Graham has won the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate, according to a race call by the Associated Press, securing her place on the ballot for the November general election.

Graham defeated Rep. Ralph Norman in Tuesday’s Republican primary runoff after no candidate secured enough support to win the initial GOP special election primary earlier this month.

Her victory was strengthened by the endorsement of President Donald Trump, who backed Graham both as the interim successor to her late brother and as a candidate for a full Senate term.

Graham was appointed to the Senate by South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster following the death of her brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham, who died from a heart condition on July 11.

She will now face Democratic nominee Annie Andrews, a pediatrician, in November in a state that remains firmly Republican.

Darline Graham Secures Republican Senate Nomination

The Republican runoff became a closely watched contest because Graham entered the race as a political newcomer while Norman brought years of experience in elected office.

Graham’s campaign, however, benefited from a powerful combination of name recognition, her family’s political legacy and Trump’s endorsement.

At a rally in Myrtle Beach on Aug. 21, Trump urged Republican voters to support Graham, framing his endorsement partly as a tribute to her late brother.

“I’m doing this to honor Lindsey. That’s why I’m here,” Trump said at the rally.

Graham also embraced her lack of political experience as part of her campaign message.

“The critics say I shouldn’t run for the Senate. They say I’m not a politician. You know what I say? Guilty as charged,” she told supporters.

Trump’s Endorsement Boosts Graham’s Senate Campaign

The Trump endorsement of Darline Graham represented one of the president’s most significant interventions in a Republican primary during the 2026 election cycle.

Trump’s super PAC, MAGA Inc., spent more than $827,000 supporting Graham’s campaign.

The president’s influence in Republican primaries has produced mixed results this year, with Trump-backed candidates losing several closely watched contests in states including Florida, Georgia, Iowa and Minnesota.

Nevertheless, his endorsement has continued to provide Republican candidates with access to Trump’s political base and substantial campaign resources.

Ralph Norman’s Experience Was Not Enough to Win the Runoff

Graham’s Republican challenger, Ralph Norman, entered the runoff with a considerably longer political résumé.

Norman is a five-term congressman and a member of the House Freedom Caucus. Earlier in 2026, he also ran for governor of South Carolina, finishing third.

Throughout the Senate campaign, Norman emphasized his experience in Congress and argued that his background would allow him to immediately represent South Carolina in the Senate.

He also embraced his status as an underdog.

“I love being an underdog,” Norman said while voting Tuesday.

Norman’s campaign also attracted support from Republicans who have been critical of Trump’s influence within the party.

He had previously supported former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley during the 2024 presidential election, when she challenged Trump for the Republican nomination.

Haley later supported Norman’s Senate campaign through more than $700,000 in outside spending from aligned political action committees.

Despite that backing, Norman was unable to overcome Graham’s combination of Trump’s endorsement, the Graham family name and her outsider message.

Graham Faces Democrat Annie Andrews in November

With the Republican nomination secured, Darline Graham will advance to the November general election against Democratic nominee Annie Andrews.

The race is expected to attract national attention because of the importance of the Senate majority and South Carolina’s strong Republican voting history.
