Cory Mills Loses Republican Primary in Florida’s 7th Congressional District

Republican Congressman Cory Mills lost his bid for a third term after being defeated in Florida’s Republican primary election by former television news anchor Ryan Elijah.

According to election results, Elijah won the race by approximately 12 percentage points, bringing an end to Mills’ effort to retain his congressional seat in one of Central Florida’s most closely watched Republican primaries.

Ethics Investigations and Controversy Overshadowed the Campaign

Mills entered the election facing significant political challenges.

Earlier this year, the House Ethics Committee launched an investigation into allegations involving campaign finance violations and accusations that Mills assaulted a former girlfriend.

Although Mills denied any wrongdoing, the controversy became a major issue throughout the campaign and created uncertainty among Republican voters.

The Florida congressman became one of several elected officials facing increased scrutiny during the 2026 election cycle because of ongoing investigations and personal controversies.

Ryan Elijah Builds Momentum With Key Republican Support

Ryan Elijah, a former local television news anchor, benefited from growing support within the Republican Party.

While Mills highlighted President Donald Trump’s endorsement throughout his campaign, Trump noticeably reduced his public support for the incumbent in the weeks leading up to the election.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also publicly distanced himself from Mills, stating that he neither endorsed nor supported the congressman’s reelection campaign.

Meanwhile, Elijah received endorsements from Florida Representatives Anna Paulina Luna and Mike Haridopolos, strengthening his position among Republican voters.

Voters Were Divided Over Cory Mills’ Candidacy

Some voters remained loyal to Mills, pointing to his record of delivering resources and funding to the district.

Others, however, expressed concerns that the controversies surrounding his campaign could jeopardize Republican control of the seat in the general election.

Several voters indicated that the ongoing investigations created too much political uncertainty, making it difficult to support the incumbent.

Democrats See an Opportunity to Flip the District

Florida’s 7th Congressional District stretches across Central Florida, extending from the northern suburbs of Orlando to the Atlantic coast south of Daytona Beach.

Although Republicans have traditionally maintained a strong presence in the district, Democrats believe the race has become increasingly competitive.

Ryan Elijah will now face Bale Dalton, a 24-year Navy veteran and former NASA chief of staff who has received support from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Political analysts have already shifted the district’s rating from “Solid Republican” to “Likely Republican,” suggesting that the general election could become more competitive than previously expected.

The General Election Could Reshape Florida’s Political Landscape

The outcome of the Republican primary reflects a broader trend in American politics, where ethical concerns, candidate controversies and voter perceptions continue to influence election results.

With Republicans seeking to maintain control of the district and Democrats investing resources in an effort to flip the seat, Florida’s 7th Congressional District will remain one of the most closely watched congressional races in the country.
