A Utah judge has ruled that Tyler Robinson will stand trial for the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The judge determined that prosecutors presented enough evidence to move forward with the case. Robinson could face the death penalty if convicted of aggravated murder.
Judge Tony Graf issued the ruling from the bench in a Provo courtroom. This concluded a months-long preliminary process that included evidence gathering, court hearings and arguments from both prosecutors and the defense.
Judge Finds Enough Evidence to Proceed
During the hearing, Graf determined that prosecutors had established probable cause for all seven criminal counts filed against Robinson.
“This evidence is sufficient at this stage to support a reasonable belief that the defendant is the individual who shot and killed Charlie Kirk,” Graf said.
The judge’s decision does not determine Robinson’s guilt. Instead, it allows the criminal case to proceed to trial based on the evidence presented during the preliminary proceedings.
Among the charges is aggravated murder, along with an allegation that the victim was specifically targeted.
Robinson Enters a Not Guilty Plea
Following the judge’s ruling, Graf asked the defense whether Robinson wanted to enter a plea.
Robinson, a 23-year-old man from St. George, Utah, entered a plea of not guilty through his attorneys.
The plea means the case will now move forward toward trial. Now, prosecutors will be required to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt.
Death Penalty Remains a Possibility
Because Robinson faces an aggravated murder charge, prosecutors could seek the death penalty. They can only do this if the case meets the legal requirements for capital punishment.
The decision to proceed with the case marks another major step in the prosecution. This follows Kirk’s death at Utah Valley University last September.
The upcoming trial is expected to focus on the evidence surrounding the shooting and the circumstances leading to Kirk’s death. Additionally, it will address the allegations that Robinson intentionally targeted him.
What Happens Next?
With the probable-cause hearing concluded and Robinson having entered a not guilty plea, the case will continue through the Utah court system as a result.
Future proceedings are expected to address additional pretrial matters. Ultimately, a jury will determine whether Robinson is guilty of the charges against him.
