MORGAN, Minnesota — Mike Lindell is making his close relationship with President Donald Trump a central part of his campaign for governor of Minnesota, arguing that his direct access to the president gives him an advantage over his Republican rivals.
The MyPillow founder appeared at Minnesota Farmfest, a major agricultural event that traditionally attracts candidates during election seasons. While many of the other politicians attending wore casual clothing, Lindell arrived in a dark suit and red tie and used his appearance to emphasize his relationship with Trump.
“I have an advantage over everyone up here. I can call up and work with the president of the United States,” Lindell told attendees.
Lindell Makes Trump Connection a Central Campaign Message
Lindell is seeking the Republican nomination in the August primary to succeed Democratic Gov. Tim Walz, who decided not to pursue a third term.
The Minnesota businessman has positioned himself as a strongly pro-Trump candidate, making the president’s endorsement and their political relationship key elements of his campaign.
That strategy comes despite Trump’s difficulty winning Minnesota. The president has never carried the state in his three presidential campaigns, making the Republican effort to win the governor’s mansion particularly challenging.
Lindell’s campaign also comes as the Trump administration has faced controversy in Minnesota over federal policies involving Medicaid and immigration enforcement.
Republican Establishment Raises Concerns
Although Trump has endorsed Lindell, his campaign has faced resistance from parts of Minnesota’s Republican establishment.
The state Republican Party previously endorsed another candidate, highlighting the divide between Lindell’s Trump-aligned campaign and party leaders who believe a different Republican may have a stronger chance in the general election.
Republican strategist Preya Samsundar said Lindell’s close personal relationship with Trump helps explain the endorsement but questioned whether that connection would translate into statewide electoral success.
Lindell has also faced questions regarding his residency and renewed allegations concerning his personal history. He has rejected the accusations and characterized the challenges to his campaign as a coordinated effort to undermine his candidacy following Trump’s endorsement.
Republican Rivals Offer Different Approaches
Lindell is competing against several Republican candidates, including Kendall Qualls and Lisa Demuth.
Qualls, the party-endorsed candidate and an Army veteran, has presented himself as a candidate capable of bringing a different style of leadership to Minnesota.
Demuth, who has served as speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives, has emphasized her experience working across party lines. She has also emerged as one of the strongest Republican fundraisers in the race.
The candidates offered contrasting visions during the Farmfest forum, with Lindell emphasizing his connection to Trump while his rivals highlighted government experience and the ability to work within Minnesota’s political system.
Amy Klobuchar Prepares for the General Election
Democratic U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar has emerged as the likely Democratic candidate for governor and has sharply criticized the Republican field’s alignment with Trump.
Klobuchar argued that Minnesota needs a governor who will prioritize the state’s interests rather than simply support the president’s agenda.
She has specifically criticized the Republican candidates over their positions on tariffs, immigration policies, and the war in Iran.
A Challenging Race for Republicans
Minnesota presents a difficult political environment for Republicans. While the party has gained support in parts of the state, Democrats have maintained a strong statewide presence, and Trump has repeatedly failed to win Minnesota in presidential elections.
