According to Japan’s meteorological agency, some areas received three times their average monthly August rainfall in less than 12 hours.
The flooding occurred during the country’s annual Obon festival, one of Japan’s busiest travel periods. During this time, millions of people return to their hometowns to celebrate with family and participate in traditional events.
Transportation systems were heavily affected as highways and rail services were suspended. Thousands of travelers became stranded at Narita International Airport, one of Japan’s largest international transportation hubs.
Authorities also reported that approximately 40% of local municipalities experienced flooding, while more than 20,000 households lost electricity.
Several victims were discovered inside submerged vehicles after becoming trapped on flooded roads.
Europe Faces Its Fifth Heatwave of the Summer
Meanwhile, Europe is experiencing its fifth major heatwave of the summer, affecting approximately 300 million people across the continent.
Meteorologists say the current heatwave has lasted longer than the devastating European heatwave of 2003. That heatwave claimed tens of thousands of lives.
Scientists have repeatedly warned that Europe is warming at nearly twice the global average because of its geographical position. Furthermore, its proximity to the Arctic, where melting glaciers are reducing the planet’s ability to reflect solar radiation, also contributes.
In France, Italy, and Spain, nearly 92 million people are currently experiencing temperatures above 95°F (35°C). This creates dangerous conditions in cities where air-conditioning remains uncommon.
Drought Threatens Europe’s Water and Energy Infrastructure
The extreme temperatures are worsening an already severe drought that has affected much of Western Europe.
In France, nearly 70% of the country is operating under water restrictions as rivers continue to shrink. Officials have described the drought as both historic and critical, warning that lower water levels could affect nuclear energy production.
Germany is also facing significant challenges as historically low water levels along the Rhine River disrupt transportation. Additionally, the low levels expose normally submerged landmarks.
In Italy, declining water levels in Rome’s Tiber River have revealed the remains of Nero’s Bridge. This ancient structure once connected parts of the city.
Meanwhile, Romania has begun shutting down one of the reactors at the Cernavoda nuclear power plant. The Danube River no longer provides sufficient water for cooling operations.
Hungary is also exploring long-term solutions to protect its energy infrastructure from the effects of lower river levels.
Wildfires Continue to Spread Across Europe
Extreme heat has also intensified wildfire activity across several European countries.
In Croatia, firefighters battled a major wildfire in the coastal town of Omis, where at least 14 people required hospitalization.
France and Spain are still recovering from devastating wildfires that burned thousands of acres only weeks earlier. This highlights the growing connection between prolonged heatwaves, drought conditions, and increased wildfire risk.
The United Kingdom Records Historic Temperatures
The United Kingdom has also experienced unprecedented heat.
Temperatures exceeded 100°F (38°C) in parts of southern England. At the same time, drought conditions have expanded across most of England and all of Wales.
Several communities have experienced destructive wildfires, including neighborhoods in the West Midlands. In those areas, homes were destroyed and residents were forced to evacuate.
Water shortages have become so severe that utility companies are warning residents they could face supply disruptions within weeks.
Authorities are encouraging people to reduce water consumption by limiting activities such as washing vehicles and using lawn sprinklers. They are even recommending the reuse of household water for gardening.
According to British meteorological officials, July 2026 was the hottest month ever recorded in the United Kingdom. Furthermore, current projections suggest that 2026 could become the hottest year in the country’s history.
