New Protections for Children
The proposed legislation would also introduce stronger protections for children against potentially harmful online content.
Authorities are seeking to restrict children’s exposure to material promoting eating disorders, hostility toward women, pornography, criminal activity and dangerous stunts.
Content capable of causing serious psychological distress would also fall under the government’s proposed protections.
The measures build on Australia’s broader efforts to address the potential risks social media can pose to young people.
Social Media Platforms Face Greater Responsibility
The proposed rules would place additional obligations on social media companies operating in Australia.
Rather than leaving users with limited control over algorithmic recommendations, platforms would be expected to provide tools. These would give people more influence over what appears in their feeds.
The government argues that users should have greater transparency and control. This is increasingly important as artificial intelligence and recommendation algorithms determine which posts, videos and other content receive attention.
