This summer delivered extraordinary heat across the planet, with August tying the global temperature record and the United States experiencing its hottest summer in more than a century of climate observations.
The extreme temperatures have renewed concerns about the accelerating effects of climate change, as scientists warn that record-breaking heat is becoming an increasingly common feature of a warming planet.
August Reaches Record Global Temperatures
According to the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, August recorded a global average temperature of 62.53 degrees Fahrenheit (16.96 degrees Celsius).
The month effectively tied July 2023 as the hottest month ever measured. Global temperatures were also more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, a threshold that has become a major benchmark in international climate policy.
The record warmth was not limited to a particular region. Scientists reported unusually high temperatures across multiple continents and exceptionally warm ocean conditions.
The U.S. Experienced Its Hottest Summer
The United States also recorded extraordinary temperatures.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported that the summer period from June through August was the warmest on record for the contiguous United States, based on 132 years of observations.
August itself was the hottest August ever recorded in the Lower 48, with an average temperature of 75.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Average daytime maximum temperatures also reached a record 88.6 degrees Fahrenheit.
Meanwhile, drought affected nearly 60% of the country during the summer, adding further pressure to communities and water supplies.
Climate Change Is the Main Driver
Scientists say the primary explanation for the continuing temperature records is human-caused climate change.
The burning of fossil fuels has increased concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, trapping additional heat and raising global temperatures.
Climate scientists increasingly emphasize that extreme heat events are occurring against this warmer baseline. As the planet continues to warm, heat waves that were once considered exceptional can become more frequent and severe.
El Niño Adds Another Layer of Heat
A developing El Niño climate pattern also contributed to the unusually warm conditions.
El Niño is a naturally occurring phenomenon in which waters in the central and eastern tropical Pacific become warmer than normal, releasing additional heat into the atmosphere and influencing weather patterns around the world.
Scientists emphasize, however, that El Niño is occurring within an already warming climate.
The interaction between natural climate variability and long-term global warming can temporarily intensify extreme temperatures.
Heat Is Affecting Millions of People
The consequences of the extreme heat have been felt well beyond temperature records.
Millions of people in the United States experienced extreme heat warnings or advisories during the summer. Europe and other regions also endured prolonged periods of dangerous temperatures.
Scientists are particularly concerned about nighttime heat. When temperatures remain unusually high overnight, the human body has less opportunity to recover from daytime exposure.
Research has linked increasingly hot nights to significant losses of sleep, adding another health consequence to the growing problem of extreme heat.
Record Heat Increases Other Climate Risks

Extreme heat increases demand for air conditioning and electricity while intensifying drought conditions and placing additional stress on water resources. Warmer oceans can also influence weather patterns and marine ecosystems.

Scientists Warn That More Records Are Coming
Climate researchers expect unusually high temperatures to continue unless global greenhouse gas emissions decline significantly.
While renewable energy and other climate solutions have expanded, scientists say current progress is not sufficient to reverse the broader warming trend.
