Authorities in Spokane County, Washington, have arrested a suspect in connection with the Old Trails Fire. This is the most destructive of several wildfires that have devastated communities across the Spokane region.
The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the arrest of 37-year-old Aaron Farinacci, who has been charged with first-degree arson following an extensive investigation into the fire’s origin. Meanwhile, officials say the suspect was taken into custody without incident after investigators gathered additional evidence linking him to the blaze.
Investigation Leads to Arrest
According to Sheriff John Nowels, the investigation gained momentum after a local resident reported seeing a man bending near dry grass in the area. This was the location where the fire is believed to have started.
Detectives initially questioned and released the suspect before obtaining additional evidence that led to his arrest. Investigators believe the fire was intentionally ignited using matches or a lighter. Both of these items were reportedly found in the suspect’s possession.
Authorities also executed a search warrant at the suspect’s residence as part of the ongoing investigation.
Wildfires Leave Widespread Destruction
The Old Trails Fire is one of three major wildfires burning in and around Spokane. Driven by strong winds, extreme heat, and exceptionally dry conditions, the fires have rapidly spread across eastern Washington.
Current reports indicate the wildfires have:
- Burned more than 7,000 acres
- Destroyed approximately 700 structures
- Forced the evacuation of nearly 65,000 residents
- Impacted homes, businesses, healthcare facilities, and the regional Veterans Affairs campus
Despite the extensive damage, officials have reported no fatalities or serious injuries.
Emergency Response Continues
Hundreds of displaced residents are currently sheltering at the Spokane Convention Center. The American Red Cross continues to provide emergency assistance, including food, temporary housing, and medical support.
Firefighters are taking advantage of calmer weather conditions to strengthen containment lines. This is before another forecasted heat wave and increased winds return later this week.
Washington Governor Bob Ferguson has requested a federal emergency declaration. He is seeking additional resources for disaster relief, temporary housing, food assistance, and search-and-rescue operations.
Wildfire Risk Remains High
Emergency officials continue to urge residents to follow evacuation orders and remain alert as firefighting efforts continue across the region.
The cause of the remaining Spokane-area wildfires is still under investigation. Authorities have not indicated whether the arrested suspect is connected to any fires beyond the Old Trails Fire.
As drought conditions persist throughout the Pacific Northwest, officials warn that elevated temperatures, dry vegetation, and gusty winds continue to create an environment where new wildfires can spread rapidly. Therefore, public vigilance is critical during the remainder of the fire season.
