Trump urges Republican lawmakers to support comprehensive tax package

Former President Donald Trump met with Republican lawmakers on Tuesday at the Capitol to promote a sweeping legislative package that includes tax cuts, spending reductions, deregulation, and increased funding for border security — core components of the GOP’s policy goals.

Despite ongoing disagreements among party members, Trump emphasized party unity and encouraged lawmakers to move forward with the legislation ahead of a Memorial Day deadline set by House Speaker Mike Johnson.

The bill has exposed divisions within the Republican caucus. Fiscal conservatives are seeking stronger deficit reduction measures, while representatives from high-tax states are pushing to raise the cap on state and local tax (SALT) deductions. Additionally, concerns have been raised by lawmakers who want to maintain access to Medicaid, particularly in response to proposed changes to eligibility requirements.

Trump engaged directly with members during the meeting, offering informal remarks, answering questions, and urging support for the bill. Some attendees described the meeting as impactful, though a full agreement among lawmakers was not reached. Reports indicated that Trump reiterated his position against altering the SALT cap, a major point of contention for northeastern Republicans.

While several members indicated openness to Trump’s message, others, such as New York Rep. Mike Lawler, maintained their stance in favor of lifting the SALT cap. Meanwhile, Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie reaffirmed his opposition to the overall bill, drawing criticism from Trump.

Republican leaders in the House have underscored Trump’s consistent involvement in the legislative process. Although progress has been made — including the bill’s advancement through committee over the weekend — discussions continue as GOP leadership works to secure broader support ahead of a final vote.
