Disagreement on Palestinian Recognition
President Donald Trump voiced opposition to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s plan to recognize the Palestinian state later this month, unless Israel commits to a peace framework in Gaza.
Speaking at a joint press conference, Trump emphasized that the immediate release of hostages in Gaza remains his priority and noted that this stance represents “one of our few disagreements” with Starmer.
Starmer clarified that his government’s announcement was not connected to Trump’s state visit and stressed that Hamas cannot play a role in any future Palestinian governance due to the October 7 attacks.
Views on the War in Ukraine
The leaders also addressed Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. Starmer pointed to recent large-scale Russian assaults, describing them as the most significant since the invasion began, along with violations of NATO airspace. He argued these actions contradict efforts toward peace and called for stronger defenses and increased international pressure on Moscow.
Trump referenced his recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, which he had expected would lead to talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. However, those negotiations never materialized, and Russian strikes have escalated.
Bilateral Cooperation and Agreements
As part of the state visit, Trump and Starmer signed an agreement to strengthen collaboration in technology and nuclear energy. Trump highlighted that nuclear development could also support the growth of artificial intelligence, given its high energy demands.
The visit included meetings with business leaders and a state banquet with the royal family, underscoring the shared priorities of both governments in trade and national security.
