Sam Neill, Star of Jurassic Park and The Piano, Dies at 78

Actor Sam Neill, whose distinguished career ranged from acclaimed independent films to major Hollywood blockbusters, has died at the age of 78. His family announced that he passed away Monday in Sydney, Australia.

According to a statement shared through the actor’s official social media channels, Neill died “suddenly and unexpectedly” while surrounded by his family. The statement added that he had remained cancer-free following treatment for angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that he publicly revealed in 2023. No official cause of death was disclosed.

Born Nigel Neill in Northern Ireland in 1947, he moved with his family to New Zealand at the age of seven. After beginning his acting career in New Zealand and Australia during the 1970s, he quickly became one of the region’s most respected performers.
