A major runway at Newark Liberty International Airport, which had been closed for renovations since mid-April, has reopened nearly two weeks ahead of schedule. Runway 4L-22R, primarily used for departures, was part of a construction project initially estimated to take 60 days, completed 13 days early.
Airport authorities stated that the early reopening is expected to help alleviate congestion and improve operational efficiency at the airport, which has recently experienced delays due to technical challenges, staffing shortages, and ongoing construction.
The expedited progress was made possible by hiring additional crews, maintaining around-the-clock work schedules, and coordinating with contractors to speed up timelines. Enhancements included full repaving, updated airfield signage and lighting, as well as upgrades to the underground electrical system and runway drainage.
The runway, which measures 11,000 feet long and 150 feet wide, was last rehabilitated in 2014. The recent work ensures it meets current safety standards set by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
While the runway is now operational, officials noted that some weeknight and weekend closures will still occur over the coming months as part of the final completion phase, expected by the end of the year. The FAA is also in the process of certifying the runway for arrivals, which could increase the airport’s capacity to 34 arrivals and 34 departures per hour once approved.
