From film to stage: a long-lasting partnership
Over three decades after starring together in the cult comedy Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter are reuniting for a new artistic challenge. The two actors are performing in a fresh adaptation of Waiting for Godot, the renowned play by Samuel Beckett, which began preview performances at New York’s Hudson Theatre on September 13.
The idea originated around three years ago when Reeves considered collaborating with Winter again on a unique project. Director Jamie Lloyd embraced the proposal and took the lead in bringing the production to life.
Reeves debuts on Broadway
While Alex Winter has previous stage experience, this marks Keanu Reeves’ first appearance on Broadway. Reeves admitted feeling both anxious and hopeful as he steps into the role of Estragon. Winter, meanwhile, portrays Vladimir, forming the central duo of characters who carry the play’s philosophical weight.
Revisiting Beckett with new perspectives
First written in 1949, Waiting for Godot delves into themes of patience, uncertainty, and the search for meaning as two companions wait endlessly for someone who may never arrive. Winter noted that performing the play at their current age brings new depth, as personal experiences, challenges, and losses give additional resonance to the material.
The production is scheduled to run at the Hudson Theatre through January 4, 2026, offering audiences the rare chance to see Reeves and Winter explore one of the most influential works in modern theater, far removed from the comedic time-travel adventures that first made them household names.
