Jeanine Pirro Confirmed as Top Federal Prosecutor in Washington D.C.

Senate Approves Nomination Following Divided Vote

The United States Senate has confirmed Jeanine Pirro as the new U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia with a 50-45 vote. Her appointment fills a key leadership role in the federal justice system after a previous nominee withdrew.

Pirro brings extensive courtroom and prosecutorial experience to the role. A 1975 graduate of Albany Law School, she served as a judge in Westchester County, New York, and was later elected as the county’s district attorney, holding the position for three consecutive terms. Her hands-on experience in the legal system contrasts with prior nominees who lacked prosecutorial backgrounds.

Prior to serving as acting U.S. Attorney starting in May, Pirro was a television co-host on a prime-time news program, where she regularly conducted political interviews.

Political Context and Past Controversies

Pirro’s confirmation followed the withdrawal of Ed Martin Jr., whose nomination was contested due to his support for individuals involved in the events at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Martin has since been appointed as the Justice Department’s pardon attorney.

In 2021, Pirro was named in a defamation lawsuit by a voting technology firm. The case, filed in state court, alleges that she and others made false statements during coverage of the 2020 election.

Outlook as Federal Prosecutor in D.C.

Now officially confirmed, Pirro takes charge of one of the most prominent U.S. Attorney’s offices in the country. Her responsibilities will include prosecuting high-profile federal and local cases. With her background in judicial and prosecutorial roles, she steps into the position with a foundation of practical experience that will be closely observed as she leads legal efforts in the nation’s capital.
