Goo Goo Dolls Remain Strong After Nearly Four Decades in Music

A Creative Phase with “Summer Anthem”

The alternative rock band Goo Goo Dolls has released a new EP titled Summer Anthem, available as of August 22. Among the tracks are “Nothing Lasts Forever” and “Not Goodbye (Close My Eyes),” titles that initially sparked speculation about a possible farewell.

Lead vocalist and co-founder John Rzeznik clarified that the songs are not about retirement but rather about the fleeting nature of relationships and life.

Rzeznik’s Enduring Career

With 14 studio albums, nearly 40 singles, and multiple award nominations, the Goo Goo Dolls have built a lasting legacy in rock. Their hit “Iris” remains one of the most recognized ballads in modern music.

Rzeznik, who will turn 60 in December, continues to perform with energy and dedication. He maintains his signature voice with the help of vocal training and focuses on balancing his career with family life, particularly time with his 8-year-old daughter.

Evolution and Legacy in the Music Industry

At this stage of his career, Rzeznik says he is no longer focused on chasing radio hits but instead on creating music that resonates with his audience. He highlights the value of having had time to grow as a songwriter, something he believes is increasingly rare for younger artists today.

The band’s sold-out 29-date Summer Anthem tour reflects their ongoing relevance. For Rzeznik, music remains an open space for experimentation and expression. Even though he admits to not knowing all the guitar chords, he enjoys exploring sounds and finding new ways to connect through creativity.
