Revisión integral propuesta para ocho museos del Smithsonian

Request for Internal Evaluation

The White House has sent a letter to the Smithsonian Institution requesting a comprehensive internal review of eight museums, aiming to align their content with established cultural guidelines for the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations.

The communication, addressed to Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch, outlines a staged process involving the National Museum of American History, the National Museum of Natural History, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the National Museum of the American Indian, the National Air and Space Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.

Scope of the Review

The plan includes evaluating exhibition texts, social media content, curatorial processes, and exhibition planning. It also requests grant-related documents, permanent collection inventories, and visitor surveys. The letter sets deadlines of 30, 75, and 120 days for different phases, and if adjustments are deemed necessary, museums are asked to replace language considered divisive with historically verified and constructive descriptions.

Recently, the National Museum of American History removed references to former President Donald Trump’s impeachment trials from an exhibit following an internal review.

Smithsonian’s Position

In a statement, the Smithsonian reaffirmed its commitment to rigorous scholarship, factual historical presentation, and independence from political or partisan influence. The Board of Regents stated it will maintain vigilant, independent oversight to ensure objectivity and inclusive access to its museums.

Next Steps

The government anticipates completing the review process in early 2026, assuming institutions meet the established deadlines and requirements. The initiative has sparked discussion on the balance between governmental oversight and the autonomy of cultural institutions.
