James Gunn Introduces a More Human Side of Superman

The DC Studios head shares his vision for a reimagined Man of Steel

Filmmaker James Gunn, known for directing the Guardians of the Galaxy series, takes the lead in reviving the Superman franchise with his latest film, Superman, which marks his first release as CEO of DC Studios. His aim: to redefine the character through emotional depth and human vulnerability.

A Superman That Feels Real

David Corenswet was selected to play Superman due to his commanding presence and strong acting range. Gunn emphasized the importance of portraying the character with humor, emotional nuance, and authenticity. This Superman is not omnipotent — in fact, he begins the story with a physical defeat, setting the tone for a version that feels more grounded.

Rather than an untouchable god, Gunn’s Superman is someone who yearns to belong — someone who, despite his power, struggles with feeling like an outsider among the people he protects.

Personal Bonds and Emotional Storytelling

The film introduces Krypto, Superman’s loyal dog, for the first time in live-action. The character is based on Gunn’s own adopted rescue dog, adding a personal layer to the film. Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, is reimagined as a tech magnate obsessed with public perception, whose envy of Superman becomes a central motivation.

Kindness in a Cynical World

One of the film’s key themes is how good deeds are often met with suspicion in today’s society. Gunn sees Superman’s kindness as a bold narrative choice, especially in an age dominated by irony and doubt. “There’s nothing more rebellious now than showing someone truly good,” Gunn reflects.

Superman premieres on July 11, offering a redefined and emotionally resonant version of the iconic superhero.
