Former President Trump Defends Use of U.S. Military in Cities

Debate on domestic military involvement

Former President Donald Trump recently defended the idea of deploying U.S. troops within the country, describing the situation as an effort to confront what he called the “enemy within.” Speaking to senior military leaders in Quantico, Virginia, he stated that the armed forces could play a crucial role in preventing potential unrest from escalating.

Trump mentioned that he had suggested to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth the possibility of using cities with high crime rates as training environments for the military, pointing out that such locations would offer real challenges for the troops.

This discussion highlighted the relevance of the Posse Comitatus Act, a law enacted nearly 150 years ago that restricts the use of federal troops for domestic law enforcement, though it includes exceptions. Within this context, Trump also recalled the deployment of National Guard units to cities such as Chicago and Portland, a move disputed by some state leaders.

Changes in the Department of Defense

During the meeting, Trump and Hegseth emphasized the recent decision to rename the Department of Defense as the “Department of War.” They argued that this change seeks to reaffirm what they consider the institution’s original purpose: military readiness for conflict.

Hegseth highlighted stricter physical requirements for service members, announcing that all personnel will need to pass two fitness tests per year and comply with height and weight standards. He also declared a ban on beards and long hair, alongside a review of the official definitions of “toxic leadership,” “bullying,” and “hazing,” aimed at strengthening the authority of commanding officers.

Broader context and international presence

The event also provided Trump with an opportunity to present his views on foreign policy, addressing international conflicts and criticizing political opponents. The meeting, attended by military leaders from around the world, was held under heightened security measures given the sensitivity of the topics discussed.
