La Universidad Brown alcanza un acuerdo federal para restablecer la financiación de la investigación

University Recovers Grants and Ends Federal Investigations

Brown University has reached an agreement with the federal government that reinstates numerous suspended grants and concludes investigations into alleged discriminatory practices. As part of the arrangement, the institution will contribute $50 million over ten years to workforce development organizations in Rhode Island.

The federal government also agreed to reimburse the university $50 million for previously unpaid research grant expenses. Under the terms of the agreement, Brown will adopt the government’s definitions of “male” and “female” and remove any consideration of race from its admissions processes.

Academic Independence and New Commitments

President Christina H. Paxson emphasized that the agreement maintains Brown’s academic autonomy. The deal includes a clause stating the federal government cannot interfere with curricula or the content of academic speech.

Brown has also committed to measures aimed at addressing concerns about antisemitism, such as renewing collaborations with Israeli academics and promoting applications from Jewish day school students. An external organization, jointly selected with the government, will conduct a campus climate survey on Jewish student experiences.

Transparency in Admissions Practices

The agreement mandates detailed data disclosure about applicants, including race, grades, and standardized test scores, subject to a federal audit.

Although a 2023 Supreme Court ruling prohibits race-based admissions, the deal further bans the use of indirect criteria, such as diversity-themed personal statements.

With this settlement, three federal investigations are concluded without findings of legal violations. Brown reiterated its dedication to creating an inclusive academic environment and protecting freedom of inquiry and expression within its community.
