The journalist aims to promote balanced and fact-based reporting
CBS News has appointed Bari Weiss as its new editor in chief, part of a broader restructuring led by its corporate parent, Skydance Media. The move seeks to strengthen the network’s credibility and attract audiences looking for news that reflects a range of viewpoints and factual integrity.
Skydance Media CEO David Ellison described Weiss as a strong advocate for independent journalism and stated that her leadership will help redefine CBS News’ editorial identity. According to Ellison, the company’s goal is to provide viewers with reliable and balanced coverage that reflects diverse perspectives across the country.
Internal collaboration and challenges ahead
While Weiss lacks direct experience in broadcast operations, she will work closely with Tom Cibrowski, current president and executive editor of CBS News, who will remain in his role. Together, they will coordinate editorial direction amid reports of potential workforce reductions that could affect up to 10% of employees.
Before joining CBS, Weiss founded The Free Press, a digital platform focused on freedom of expression and diversity of thought. Skydance has also acquired this outlet, which will continue to operate independently with its own brand and subscription model.
Building public trust through editorial diversity
Weiss’s appointment aligns with Skydance’s commitment to enhancing transparency and ideological balance within CBS News programming. The company has also introduced an ombudsman position to address feedback about news coverage and uphold impartiality standards.
David Ellison has indicated plans to further expand Skydance’s media portfolio, reinforcing a vision of journalism rooted in factual reporting, open dialogue, and inclusion of varied perspectives.
