Minneapolis Community Grieves After Shooting at Catholic School

Two children killed and several others injured in church attack

On Wednesday morning, a shooting disrupted a Mass at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, leaving two children dead and at least 18 people injured, including elderly parishioners and several students.

Authorities confirmed the victims as 10-year-old Harper Moyski and 8-year-old Fletcher Merkel. Fifteen other children and three older adults sustained injuries during the attack inside the church.

Chaos and fear during the school Mass

Witnesses reported that the community had gathered for the first Mass of the school year when the gunfire erupted. At first, many believed the sounds were fireworks, until staff urged everyone to take cover.

Accounts described how older students and adults shielded younger children while parents rushed toward the building, despite the danger, in search of their loved ones. Others recalled praying together as they tried to remain safe under the pews.

Police investigation and community response

According to Minneapolis police, the shooter never entered the church but fired through its windows, damaging stained glass and wooden frames. Authorities noted that the immediate actions of those inside, along with emergency responders, prevented further casualties.

The incident has deeply affected the Annunciation Catholic School community, which has a long history of serving multiple generations of local families. Residents and parishioners expressed grief and solidarity, emphasizing the importance of supporting survivors and addressing the trauma left by the violence.
