U.S. Strikes on Iranian Nuclear Sites: Impact and International Reactions

Conflicting Assessments and Trump’s Statements

During the recent NATO summit in The Hague, former President Donald Trump discussed the latest U.S. military actions targeting key nuclear facilities in Iran. Trump claimed the strikes were highly effective, describing the operation as “very successful” and “devastating,” despite an early U.S. intelligence report suggesting only limited damage.

The strikes were carried out shortly before a ceasefire was announced between Iran and Israel. Trump referenced this context to emphasize the strategic impact of the bombings, comparing them to historic events like the conclusion of World War II.

Intelligence Reports and Official Analyses

Initial assessments by the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency estimated that the strikes delayed Iran’s nuclear program by only a few months. However, later statements and additional reports suggested a more severe impact. The CIA issued an unusual public statement indicating that several major Iranian nuclear facilities were heavily damaged and would require years to rebuild.

An analysis by Israel’s Atomic Energy Commission also stated that Iran’s nuclear weapons development capacity had been significantly impaired by the U.S. airstrikes.

NATO Defense Spending and Policy Shifts

At the summit, NATO members agreed to increase defense spending to 5% of their GDP by 2035. Trump, who has previously criticized allied nations for underfunding collective defense, noted a change in his view following discussions at the summit. He acknowledged a renewed appreciation for the commitment of European nations to security cooperation.

Meeting with Ukraine’s President

Prior to the press conference, Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He stated that the ongoing war in Ukraine was not discussed in depth but conveyed Zelenskyy’s desire to see the conflict end. Trump added that he intended to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin to explore options for resolving the situation, though he noted challenges due to Putin’s current stance.
