Earth experienced its hottest August ever recorded, according to Europe’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, as human-driven global warming combined with a powerful El Niño event to push temperatures to extraordinary levels.
The record heat contributed to what scientists described as the hottest Northern Hemisphere summer ever measured, highlighting the continued acceleration of extreme temperatures around the world.
Global Temperatures Reached Extraordinary Levels
The global average temperature in August reached approximately 62.53 degrees Fahrenheit (16.96 degrees Celsius), according to Copernicus.
That figure was about one-hundredth of a degree Celsius above the previous monthly record set in July 2023. However, because the difference falls within the uncertainty range of the measurements, scientists consider the two records effectively tied.
Even so, the data reinforce a broader trend: global temperatures are continuing to reach unprecedented levels as the planet warms.
Climate Change and El Niño Combine
Scientists attribute the exceptional temperatures to a combination of long-term human-caused climate change and a particularly strong El Niño climate pattern.
Human activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels, have increased concentrations of heat-trapping greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. El Niño can then temporarily amplify global temperatures by influencing ocean and atmospheric conditions.
The combination can produce particularly intense heat across different parts of the planet.
The Northern Hemisphere Experienced Extreme Heat
August’s temperatures came after an exceptionally hot Northern Hemisphere summer.
Several regions experienced prolonged heat waves, placing additional pressure on communities, infrastructure and public health systems. In the United States, extreme heat affected numerous areas during the summer, with cities experiencing dangerous temperatures and persistent periods of unusually warm weather.
Such events are becoming an increasingly important concern as climate change raises the baseline from which heat waves develop.
