AI Chat Tools Gain Popularity Among U.S. Teens but Face Growing Scrutiny

Digital companions are used for entertainment, advice, and emotional support

A new national survey shows that nearly three-quarters of teenagers in the United States have used conversational artificial intelligence tools at least once. These digital companions are being used for entertainment, to explore personal thoughts, or to seek emotional support.

Platforms like Replika, CHAI, Character.AI, and Nomi offer teens the chance to engage with AI-generated personas that simulate real conversations. According to the study, 52% of teens interact with these tools regularly — at least a few times per month.

Teens still value real-life relationships

Despite frequent use of AI companions, teens continue to favor human interaction. The survey found that 80% prioritize friendships with real people. However, one-third reported discussing serious issues with AI tools, and a similar number described those chats as equally or more fulfilling than conversations with humans.

The research also highlighted privacy concerns. About 25% of teens said they shared personal details, such as their name or location, with AI companions — systems that are also designed to collect user data.

Concerns about developmental impact and safety

Given that adolescence is a formative stage for emotional growth and social development, experts are cautious about the increasing role of AI in teens’ digital lives. On average, teens spend over eight and a half hours a day on screens. A third of participants said they felt uncomfortable during an AI conversation, raising questions about the design and safety of these platforms.

The study concludes with a recommendation that individuals under 18 avoid using AI companions altogether, citing the potential for addictive behavior and a lack of safeguards aimed at protecting youth well-being.
