A guide to switching appliances from gas to electric

After replacing their gas car with an electric one and installing solar panels on their century-old home, Lindsey Williamson and her husband looked for more ways to reduce their carbon footprint. They learned about heat pump water heaters but struggled to find a local installer familiar with this technology.

Williamson’s experience is not unique. Many people seeking to switch from gas to electric appliances to reduce their carbon emissions face similar challenges. Limited information and a shortage of qualified professionals can be significant obstacles.

To address this, companies, non-profit organizations, and government agencies have started offering “coaching” services to help homeowners transition. These services guide users on choosing electric appliances, finding qualified contractors, and understanding available government incentives.

One notable initiative is QuitCarbon, a California-based company that connects users with contractors supporting the switch to electric appliances. Beyond installation, the company advises clients on financial incentives that can reduce upfront costs.

Other organizations, such as Efficiency Maine in the United States, promote this transition through educational programs and automatic store discounts for efficient appliances. These programs aim to boost demand for electric appliances, encouraging suppliers and contractors to develop expertise in installation.

Finally, groups like Rewiring America are training volunteers as “electrification coaches” to help households make informed decisions when switching to cleaner appliances.
