A film that exposes the dark side of the game
Football season arrives alongside “HIM”, a new film that intertwines the excitement of sports with psychological horror. The story follows Cameron Cade, a rookie quarterback sent to train under a fading legend in an isolated desert compound. The unsettling environment, paired with eerie architecture, heightens the suspense as themes of ambition, sacrifice, and survival emerge.
From athlete to rising Hollywood star
Leading the cast is Tyriq Withers, a 27-year-old actor with a background in college football at Florida State. His athletic experience adds credibility to his role, portraying a young player full of determination and heart. This project marks a breakthrough moment in his acting career, positioning him as a new face to watch in the film industry.
Withers is joined by Marlon Wayans as mentor Isaiah White, a role infused with restrained menace. Beyond acting, Wayans has also taken on the role of real-life mentor, encouraging Withers to develop his skills as a writer and producer. His advice underlines the importance of creating opportunities and building a sustainable path in Hollywood.
Beyond the horror genre
While “HIM” delivers suspense and fear, it also raises questions about the exploitation of professional athletes, particularly Black players, whose physical and mental limits are pushed for profit and spectacle. This thematic layer connects the film to broader cultural conversations about sports and identity.
Withers had previously demonstrated his versatility in television, including a notable role in 2022. Looking ahead, he will star in “Reminders of Him”, a romantic drama based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel. For the actor, stepping into a story about love, grief, and forgiveness proved even more challenging, as it required embracing emotional vulnerability.
