Former President Donald Trump stated that federal authorities are prepared to deploy National Guard units to U.S. cities to assist in addressing crime and unrest.
Executive Order Creates Specialized Unit

Chicago Considered as a Potential Destination
During the signing of the orders, Trump emphasized that he would prefer governors to formally request assistance before sending federal troops. Regarding Illinois, he clarified that no such request has been made and therefore no action will be taken at this time.
He noted that Chicago had been considered as a possible location for a federal crackdown but stressed that the decision would depend on state authorities seeking federal intervention.
Local Authorities’ Position
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed opposition to the idea, stating that sending federal troops to occupy American cities would not align with democratic principles or constitutional boundaries. He also explained that his office has not received any direct communication from the White House about a potential deployment.
